maybe those creatures just withdraw to hurt not just themselves, but the people they are holding back from and for no reason. they don't know why they do it, and they don't intentionally want to see that person unhappy, when it happens there is guilt, but also a strange sort of pleasure in that, hey, i mean something, and also...i can do without you
